Your Preventative Maintenance Checklist
Here is a checklist and some rules of thumb that will help you maintain your vehicle and keep it on the road.
Change the Oil and Oil Filter
Over time and use, the oil gets dirty and begins to break down. The oil filter helps to keep dirt and debris out of the motor oil. Have your oil and oil filter changed as often as the manufacturer recommends to have confidence that your vehicle is performing optimally.
Replace Your Windshield Wipers
As windshield wipers wear, they do not make proper contact with your windshield. Worn wipers leave streaks and smears and that puts your safety at risk. The best practice is to replace windshield wipers every 6 to 12 months.
Rotate Your Tires
Your tires wear down at different rates based on their position. Front tires tend to wear down quicker than back tires, especially on front-wheel drive vehicles where they work much harder.
Your tires should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles or every 6 months. With regular rotations, your tires will wear more evenly, which helps your tires last longer and saves you money.
Balance and Align Your Wheels
Your wheels are automatically read to go, right? Not quite. The weight of your wheel may not be distributed equally around the axel, causing your tire to wobble. When you have your wheels balanced routinely, it helps balance the weight and helps the wheel to evenly rotate.
Balance and align your wheels every 6,000 miles or six months to keep your car driving straight, reduce tire wear, and save some cash.
Clean and Test Your Battery
A dead battery can leave you stranded in the most inopportune moments. Clean battery terminals from time to time and remove built-up corrosion builds. Cleaning terminals helps alleviate poor battery connections that can cause starting issues.
Replace Your Spark Plugs
Spark plugs pack a lot of power and are exposed to extreme temperatures and outdoor debris. Most manufacturers recommend replacing your vehicle's spark plugs every 30,000 miles to keep your auto fired up and running.
Replace Your Filters
Air, fuel, and oil filters need attention because filters help keep your auto systems clean and functioning. Clogged or dirty filters can cause lack of acceleration, poor engine performance, and reduced gas mileage. Replace your filters before they are clogged so you can assure optimal performance.
